“In exquisitely crafted spherical sculptures, Bellerby craftsmen document their clients’ journeys in an artistic way”
To describe Bellerby & Co.’s products as globes would be unfair, as it would be to say that Ferrari’s creations are just cars, or that the Mona Lisa is a painting.
The London-based company creates highly detailed globes, ranging in size from five inches to fifty inches in diameter, almost entirely by hand. Many of these models are custom-made to showcase a customer’s personal history, and this is reflected in the price tag, which can reach $110,000 for some of the most elaborate models.
In 2008, after a career that spanned television and real estate, founder Peter Bellerby was looking for a globe to give his father for his 80th birthday. He didn’t like the models he found, so he set out to build his own.
After two years of perfecting the process, he received his first custom order. Since then, the company has grown from three to about 30 people, including cartographers, carpenters, metal experts and many painters.
“Our philosophy is that it’s all about engineering,” says Bellerby. While creating these 3D maps requires a great deal of technical skill, their artistry is their greatest asset.
So it’s best to think of these globes as hand-drawn, rotating sculptures.
They remind you of your life’s journey, your family’s migration history, or the plants and animals that inhabit a particular area.
“People project their entire lives onto globes,” says Bellerby.
1. Custom Digital Map
Three cartographers set about customising the digital map that will be printed on the paper surrounding the sculpture, keeping the names of countries and capitals and adjusting the rest to suit the client, says Bellerby.
The artist team’s modifications include highlighting favorite places or drawing an important travel route, as well as including a set of illustrations and custom decorations depicting birds and flowers or ships and lighthouses.
The printed paper is of high quality, allowing the font size to be reduced to 0.5 millimeters on the small sculptures. “In this case, you need a magnifying glass to read the map,” says Bellerby.

2- A Compass for Latitude
In a workshop on the south coast of England, Bellerby’s large models are made from glass-reinforced polymer and shipped to London in two. The smaller models are made in-house from resin and are also cut in two.
In both cases, after joining the hemispheres together, the craftsmen use a compass to draw the latitude lines that guide them as they glue the paper map.

3 – Cutting the Gores
After the map is printed, it is manually cut into triangular pieces that resemble a long marquise-cut diamond, or just half of it, and the excess is removed with a scalpel. It is a suitable tool due to the precision required in this process.

4- Watercolour Painting
An artist hand paint the cut gores with initial layers of colours, focusing on the oceans and continents.
The company has developed a watercolour painting technique that gives the impression of movement in the oceans.

5- Laying the Paper Gores
Once the painted gores are dry, they are immersed in water so that they take on a curved shape when glued to the model, a process that takes more than a year for the craftsmen at Bellerby to master, as it involves carefully smoothing the paper over the globe while avoiding wrinkles, tears and overlapping of adjacent parts.
Each globe requires 12 or 24 gores, depending on the size, so it takes hours to fix them precisely. Next comes the polar callottes that cover the North and South Poles.

6. Shading Fine Detail
After all the gores are placed on the globe, one of Bellerby’s 10 artists gets to work on giving the world a cohesive look, adding layers of detail, including shading coastlines and highlighting national borders, and then embellishing illustrations and custom elements.
“Hand-painting is more beautiful and distinct,” says Bellerby. For small land globes, this can take a few weeks. But in rare cases, the work can take more than a year from start to finish across all stages.

7 – Resin Finish
The finished globes are sealed with resin that and protects it from corrosion, making it safe to be touched and spun.
After the resin dries, the models are coated with several layers of glossy or matte finish, depending on the customer’s taste and the globe style, and this process may a few days.

8 – Precious Bearings
On the ground floor of the company’s studio, six carpenters and metalworkers handcraft and assemble the globe’s bases and spinning mechanisms. The carpenters use precious woods such as walnut and oak, and hand-carve the bases of the models to take the desired shape. In contrast, a number of English craftsmen are responsible for creating the metal elements of the model, such as the bronze and brass meridians that encircle the traditional style globes that rotate around a specific axis. All the finishing operations are done by hand in the studio. It is worth noting that some of the globes rotate freely on three ball bearings, which allows them to be examined up close.

9 – Completed Artwork
With the model and base complete, the process reaches the packaging and shipping stage, where the final product is sent in rigid, padded “flight cases” for transporting fragile, valuable goods, or in specially designed, carefully protected boxes and crates.
