This is a 36cm diameter desktop globe in what we call Schmincke Gagarin colouring. This is a deeper and more saturated variation of our standard Gagarin colouring. We work with each client one-on-one to design their globe exactly as they would like it. Their added requests included to paint the ocean-floor in a more detailed way – this was done using references but also in mind of being an artistic rendition to suit the style of painting of the globe and its chosen colouring.
We have in the past done Schmincke Gagarin darker but have moved towards doing the colouring on the lighter side when the client wants to ensure ocean cartography can be seen well.
Ocean currents were labeled in red ink for the warm currents and black ink for the cold currents.
For the USA there was an emphasis requested to add state names and state capitals and for Canada to add province names and capitals.
The client did not want our standard land map detail and instead said to remove all detail and only identify country borders and names and their capitals – as well as a few special cities to be “highlighted” and some with added hearts to signify their importance.
Hand drawn and hand painted illustration were requested with scientific names for the labels of each illustration. Illustrations are of an orca, humpback whale, right whale, and a Galapagos giant tortoise. There is also a small red anchor just east in ocean off of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
