Working from home

Hello from London. Our city is currently on lockdown but we are managing to keep working where and when possible. We have a full order book to keep us busy at the moment – and hope to still continue to take orders as normal for the coming months. This will be so important to us to keep making and be able to continue to employ talented local artists. Any questions please email [email protected]

Some of our Globemakers are kindly documenting how things are going at home. And we hope to continue to share stories on how we – as a small independently own business – are handling things day to day at the moment. For the latest give us a follow on Instagram.

Peter the owner is running supplies between houses. Gloves. Masks. Cases with globes go in & out of the car boot with no contact.

And we have a quarantine room for each globe that comes back to us – as globes go between makes & painters.

Some people are recovering at home after bouts of illness. A few are just hitting a point of feeling unwell & of course not working. Others felt ill for a short time & now feel fine – but still have to of course stay home for the time being.

Slow & stressful & everything is changing day to day. But great to make what progress we can on our current orders. And hoping to take more orders so we can continue to work in the coming weeks & months.

More photos taken from our artists this week and last!

Another day another globe being painted at home. Isis finishing up a 22cm Celestial Globe which she began before she started self-isolating. . But let’s do a few #CelestialFacts. . The Cancer constellation is located in the northern sky. Its name means “the crab” in Latin. . In mythology, Cancer is associated with the story of the Twelve Labours of Heracles (represented by the Hercules constellation). In the myth, Hera sends the crab to distract Hercules while the hero is fighting the Lernaean Hydra, the serpent-like beast with many heads and poisonous breath, represented by Hydra constellation. When the crab tries to kill Hercules, Hercules kicks it all the way to the stars. . In another version, the crab gets crushed instead and Hera, a sworn enemy of Hercules, places it in the sky for its efforts. However, she places the crab in a region of the sky that has no bright stars, because despite its efforts, the crab was not successful in accomplishing the task. Cancer does not have any stars brighter than fourth magnitude. . I am a Cancer – anyone else born in under this zodiac sign? Cancerians are born between June 21 – July 22, & belong to the Water element of the zodiac (along with Pisces & Scorpio). . And yes we are known to switch moods rapidly. We are ruled by the Moon, which is ever-changing, and thus you can have moods that can grow dark and darker. . Cancer individuals are sometimes over-imaginative, which can get them in trouble. You will cling & obsess over the situation until you have all of the answers. . You have intense mood swings, as well as sensitivity. It doesn't take much for you to go from friendly & outgoing, to totally introverted as a way of protecting yourselves. And it can prove quite confusing & unpredictable to the people in your lives. . Like a crab .. “are often resorting to your inner world when you do not feel trusted or safe.” . There are good traits to. But these are making me laugh for some reason. So true. “You become resentful & petulant often. The biggest problem is anything can make you resentful. It is very difficult to please you. You snap the situation out and come back to normal in time.”

Isis working from home today on a Mini Desk Globe & we shall continue on with our #GlobeFacts. . Madagascar was a haven for pirates. . The island’s secluded coves, and the absence for centuries of European powers, meant Madagascar was once a safe haven for hundreds of pirates. One, Captain James Misson, supposedly founded an anarchist colony (Libertatia) there in the late 17th century, while Ile Sainte-Marie, four miles off Madagascar’s east coast, was simply referred to as “the island of pirates” on maps from the time. Countless brigands, including Captain Kidd, took shelter there when they weren’t looting booty. Some are buried in the island’s cemetery. . Men and women wear the same clothes. . Lamba is the traditional garment worn by islanders – both men and women. It is a rectangular length of cloth wrapped around the body, and different designs are worn for different occasions. . Bare-knuckle fighting is a national sport. . #Moraingy is a form of bare-fisted combat sport, and it’s very popular throughout the island, as well as in Reunion, 300 miles to the east. . There are hardly any railways. . Considering its vast size, Madagascar has very few railways – just 854 kilometres of track, to be precise. Getting around the country typically involves a shared taxi (or “taxi-be” in Malagasy). . Despite the poverty, luxury tourism has arrived. . An über-luxury lodge was recently unveiled on #NosyAnkao, the largest of five islands off the north-eastern coast of Madagascar. #Miavana (accessible only by helicopter) is a centre for “blue safaris”, with the chance to spot turtles, whales and dolphins on the agenda, along with scuba diving and fishing. There’s also a top notch spa. Start saving up, though – doubles cost from £3,220 a night. . Some of its critters are just plain weird. . There’s the #GiraffeNeckedWeevil, whose appendage helps it roll leaves into tubes for its eggs; the aye-aye lemur, whose long middle finger helps it find grubs hiding inside trees; and the Malagasy giant rat, which can leap three feet into the air. . #GlobeFactsMadagascar #MadagascarFacts via Telegraph.
